Tundra Girl

The northern lights are an inspiring experience, to say the least.  How can you not feel God's hand when standing in an open tundra of snow, at the bottom of a mountain, surrounded by nothing but black sky, shining stars, and the whirring and dancing of colored lights.  So quiet and close that you feel as though you are a part of them yourself.  I'm sure they have inspired many, but last night they particularly touched this crazy 23-year-old's heart with a spark of poetic creativity....

Tundra Girl

Into the night she wandered.
Past the village lights, past the houses, past the sound of the snow machines.
To an empty place where she found the moon, the stars, and the auroras.

They sparkled and danced, they sang.
Not to her or even for her, but with her;
A perfect mirror of her own heart through the sky around her.

She sparkled as they did, she danced, and she sang.
Until they faded and grew faint in the darkness.
But her heart had known their joy, and still, it kept her warm.

So she wandered farther and listened harder.
Whispering from a distant place, she swore she heard them sing her name,
And she felt their dancing in her heart.

Disclaimer: Although written about true events and a real person (ahem, me...) the "wandering" can be more accurately described as "creeping around random houses to get the best view of the lights."  [In case anyone was wondering if I actually ran around the tundra for miles all by myself- I did not.  Mostly because it was too fricken cold for that, but also because wolves live out there and like to snack on lost 23-year-olds.  Or at least that's what I've been told.]

The poetic vision of the Tundra Girl has also been abruptly shattered upon the waking of such Tundra Girl at 8:37 am, after sleeping through her 4 separate alarms and running to school without makeup or hair done (which never really happens on any other day anyways, but you know....), and sleeping only a total of about 3 hours.  Inspiration isn't always an outwardly apparent quality, though.

Worth it?  Yes.
